Beer tasting The Hague

Tasting at the premier specialist beer café

Rootz is The Hague’s premier specialist beer café, with 30 beers on tap and over 250 bottled beers from all over the world. Our qualified beer experts will guide you and your group through a tasting of five beers, explaining what you’re tasting, why it tastes that way and how the different styles relate to one another. Bookable for groups of twelve or more, from 26 euros per person.

What you do during the tasting

You taste five beers that our expert has matched in advance, so that you truly experience the difference between the styles. Think of a crisp white beer next to a robust tripel, or a fruity IPA compared to a dark stout.

  • Five beers, guided by a certified beer expert
  • Explanation of brewing style, origin and flavour profile
  • Space to compare, ask questions and taste
  • Also suitable for guests without prior knowledge

The selection changes along with what is on tap at that time. If you would like to see what that is right now, take a look at our drinks menu.

Beer and food pairing

A tasting can also be arranged with matching nibbles. Then you experience how beer and food complement each other: how a bitter beer cuts through fat, or how a sweet touch in the beer actually softens something spicy.

  • Five beers without food, 26 euros per person
  • Five beers with matching nibbles, €38 per person
  • Available to book from twelve people

Vegetarian and vegan snacks are available. Please let us know when making your request, and the kitchen will tailor them accordingly.

When do you book a tasting

A tasting rarely stands on its own. Usually, it is the opening or the middle section of a longer programme.

Our very own Rootz Blond

We have been brewing our own blond beer, Rootz Blond, since 2014. In 2015, it was voted the best house beer in the Netherlands, and Rootz itself was named best beer restaurant in the Netherlands. We serve it at virtually every tasting, if only to show what a house beer can be.

In addition, we pour from a permanent selection and a rotating part. The menu features Brouwerij ’t IJ IPA, De Koninck, Karmeliet Tripel and Texels Skiller Wit, among others, supplemented by beers that we bring in temporarily.

How to book a tasting

For a private tasting, you can request a quote via the form or call us on 070 363 99 88. We will discuss the number of people, the date and whether you would like the food pairing option.

A tasting pairs well with drinks or dinner afterwards. Many groups use it as the opening of a Company party or a private dining, because it gets the conversation flowing before everyone sits down at the table.

Accessibility and parking

Rootz is on Grote Marktstraat, right in the heart of The Hague. It’s handy if your group is coming from different directions, and certainly if a beer is on the cards.

By public transport

From Den Haag Centraal, tram lines 2, 3, 4, 6 and 34 run to Grote Markt stop. The trams run every five minutes and the journey takes two to four minutes. Walking from the station takes a quarter of an hour.

By car

The Grote Marktstraat car park is situated directly beneath Rootz, with entrances from the Spui and the Prinsengracht. Just round the corner are Q-Park Lutherse Burgwal and Q-Park above the Texaco on the Laan; both are a two-minute walk away.

Frequently asked questions about a beer tasting

How much does a beer tasting at Rootz cost?

A tasting of five beers costs 26 euros per person. With matching snacks, that is 38 euros per person. Both options include guidance by a certified beer expert.

From how many people can I book a beer tasting?

You can book a private beer tasting for twelve people or more. For smaller groups, you are welcome to drop by our pub and choose from the draught beer menu.

Which beers will you be tasting during the tasting session?

The selection varies depending on what’s currently on tap and is carefully coordinated in advance to ensure that the styles differ from one another. Our own Rootz Blond is almost always included, alongside beers such as Brouwerij ’t IJ IPA, De Koninck, Karmeliet Tripel and Texels Skiller Wit.

Do I need to know about beer?

No. The expert tailors the explanation to the group, so the tasting works well for both enthusiasts and guests who know nothing about it yet.

Can a beer tasting be part of a company outing?

Yes. Many groups use the tasting as the opening of a corporate party or a dinner, because it gets conversations going before everyone sits down at the table.

What if someone doesn't drink beer?

No problem. We also serve wine, soft drinks and alcohol-free beers such as Heineken 0.0, Radler 0.0 and Free IPA. Please let us know in your request how many guests prefer something else to drink, and we will make sure there are plenty of alternatives ready.
